The inner-city shopping mall, Forum City Mülheim, was built in 1974 and has since repeatedly undergone expansion and conversion programmes. The revitalisation measures performed in 2011 as a necessary refurbishment of the mall's entire appearance included the areas to be converted, such as the pavilions, the roof of the mall, the food court and the station passage. The complex modernisation programme was carried out during ongoing operations. By opening up the roof using a lightweight glass roof design around the area of the station passage - the "main entrance" to the shopping mall - a new representative entryway was created. The roof of the mall also underwent a functional as well as a design revision: on the one hand the mall's energy efficiency was upgraded with new roof cladding and by exchanging the glazing; on the other, its 180-metres long soffit was clad in light metal panels which, in combination with a new lighting concept, creates a friendly atmosphere. Further optimisations included the rearrangement of the food court by establishing a central seating area, plus an improved route guidance by reducing the mall's wings. Extended and rearranged retail spaces additionally compact the retail atmosphere. The result is an increase in the welcoming quality and a longer sojourn at the centre.
