Oberstdorf lies at the terminus of the southern end of the German national rail network. The reception building‘s two-storey station hall is aligned with the direction of the existing platforms and creates a natural connection between the transverse end to the platforms and the station concourse. The arriving or departing traveller can look forward to a spacious station, full of light, with views into the surrounding landscape to provide initial orientation. The railway station at Oberstdorf presents an autonomous structure in the local landscape. .As a special purpose building, it manages to assert itself in the townscape and yet remain recognisable as a railway station. The choice of materials for the new station underlines the modern character of a „station of the future“ and makes use of building materials traditionally found in that area. In addition to functionality and material choice, the shape of the monopitch roofs contributes an identity badge for a modern public transport company.
