The far-reaching refurbishment of Barthels Hof centred on the new utilization and constructional reinstatement of the commercial premises against the setting of ist outstanding significance for downtown Leipzig. The contract to restore the historic ensemble, the oldest parts of which from the 16. century, resulted from a competition award. In collaboration with the conservation authority the interior areas an facades were restored an in part completely reconstructed. The facade looking onto the Hainstraße was reinstated to the former glory of the neo-baroque building of 1871 and the gable above the oriel in the inner courtyard, destroyed in the war, was reconstructed consistent with old documents. Interior refurbishment focused predominantly on the 18. and 19. century stairways. As with Specks Hof, planning for the new utilization was oriented to the historical structure of the building.
