A new office and department store building is created in the heart of the Erfurt city centre and in the neigbourhood directly adjacent to one of the largest squares of the old town. Its architectonic form ensures that the new block is in harmony with the buildings around it in the original part of the citiy. A department store building with a special appearance is called for because at the requirements for high quality form and function. The fullyglazed concise rounded corners of the building makes the link between the department store and the central historic Anger square and an extension to the pedestrian zone. The filigree glass façade reflects the historic atmosphere of the old town with the listed neighboughring buildings at Anger 1 and the Ursulinenkloster. While plate glass windows envelop the whole of the ground floor zone, the upper floors retain the maximum flexibility for a multitude of uses. This is expressed in the clearly structured façade by a lively variation of open and closed areas in the façade. The modern language of the architecture and the restrained choice of materials and colours leads to an exciting but harmonic grouping of forms.
